harley-davidson oil pressure questions answered

WHAT SHOULD MY OIL PRESSURE BE?
Above is the Harley-Davidson oil specs, this is the range that you want to run in. We strictly adhere to the manufacturers recommended minimum and maximum oil pressures. Do not go beyond the 36-38 p.s.i. of oil pressure at 55 m.p.h. and up. Above these pressures, it is possible to start starving the lower end oil supply!
What type of oil should i use in my Harley?
We strongly recommend a high quality conventional or synthetic straight 50 weight for all Knuckles, Pans and Shovels. For all Evo and Twin Cam engines we recommend a high quality conventional or synthetic 20w-50. This helps control initial start up oil pressure. Using our kits, you will have proper oil pressure with a warm engine.
DO I NEED A GAUGE?
An oil pressure gauge is a MUST! It is critical that you know what your oil pressure is. That is why we offer the PG-1 “Pro-Gauge”, the absolute finest oil pressure gauge on the market for the Harley-Davidson motorcycle!
MY OIL TEMPERATURE IS RUNNING HOT, CAN E.R.T. HELP?
Yes, by installing our products, the cooler oil from your oil tank that is circulated through your engine is increased. This in turn lowers your operating temperatures by 10 to 20 degrees F. Which increases your engine life!
I have lousy oil pressure, do i need a new oil pump?
Probably not, we have found that 98% of all oil pumps are all right. The problem with lousy oil pressure is the weak spring in the pressure relief valve. Our products address and correct this problem. The exception being if you have grooves in the gear pockets of the oil pump body, then your pump needs replaced.
WHY SHOULD I PURCHASE E.R.T. PRODUCTS INSTEAD OF A NEW OIL PUMP?
First of all, oil pumps are expensive, whether you buy an oil pump from Harley-Davidson or you buy an aftermarket oil pump. Secondly, most of the oil pumps on the market are direct copies of the Harley-Davidson oil pump and ALL of the pumps have the weak pressure relief spring. Finally, YOU can install our products yourself, most people are unable to replace their own oil pump and will have to pay a shop to do it, increasing the final cost. And then, after the cost of the pump and installation, you are still going to need our products to make the pump perform the way it should. That is, to produce the correct amount of oil pressure.
DOES THE SUPERPUMP-KIT OR PRO-JUST RESTRICT OIL FLOW?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! All of our products actually increase the oil flow through the engine by increasing the oil pressure delivered to the engine.
WHICH ONE DO I NEED THE SUPERPUMP-KIT OR THE PRO-JUST?
We recommend that every Harley-Davidson owner buys the SP-1 “Superpump-Kit”! For $20.00 you will have proper oil pressure. An inexpensive and easy fix for your oil pressure problems. The beauty of the “Pro-Just” is that you can “dial in” the exact amount of oil pressure that you want to run!
I’VE TRIED ALL 3 SPRINGS AND I STILL DON’T HAVE GOOD OIL PRESSURE, NOW WHAT?
Then you need to contact us and discuss the specifics of your engine, this is done on a one to one basis. Best of all, it’s absolutely FREE! When we are done, you will know why you don’t have proper oil pressure and how to fix it.
DO I NEED TO ADJUST THE PRO-JUST BACK DOWN TO NEUTRAL EVERY TIME I TURN MY BIKE OFF?
With the PJ-1 and the PJ-2, once you have the correct warm oil pressure, leave it there. Actually, once you have the correct oil pressure, we would like you to measure the space between the top of the aluminum base and the bottom of the adjusting screw, remove and clean the adjusting screw. Then apply a couple of drops of “blue” Loctite and then re-install the adjusting screw back to this measurement. With the PJ-2SS, you will need to return the adjusting screw back to the 1/4” neutral setting before you start your engine. Then adjust clock-wise to increase your oil pressure as your engines warms up.
WILL THE THUMBSCREW LOOSEN AND DECREASE MY PRESSURE OR FALL OUT WHILE I’M RIDING?
Good question! Do not adjust the PJ-1 or the PJ-2 above, beyond, greater than, etc., the neutral setting of 1/8” between the top of the aluminum base and the bottom of the adjusting screw. If you go beyond this, you will loose the spring tension on the adjusting screw and the sealing capability of the o-ring.
With the PJ-2SS, do NOT go beyond the 1/4” neutral setting.
